For years QMS Medicosmetics stands for highly effective skin care products, innovative technologies and the highest level of quality. Since the company was founded in 1986, the brand has enjoyed a high level of national and now also international popularity and is one of the leaders in the world of luxury medical cosmetics. The skin care concepts developed by beauty experts and medical professionals effectively combat the causes of skin aging and provide lasting results. A combination of powerful anti-aging ingredients, skin-identical collagen and hyaluron make QMS Medicosmetics products so unique.
Have you ever wondered how the brand QMS actually was started, how you treat your skin right with the products or what innovations you can look forward to? We met QMS Medicosmetics managing director and beauty expert Mark Stanlein and asked him a few questions about the brand, about the do's & don'ts in skin care and his beauty philosophy:
Mr. Stanlein, please tell us something about yourself so that our customers can get to know you better.
I am Mark Stanlein, 54 years young, Dutch, live in Amsterdam, am married and have a dog (Teun). I love to travel, discover the world, enjoy every food and wine, like to deal with cars and of course I am passionate about the beauty world. I am the managing director of QMS Medicosmetics in Teningen near Freiburg. I have been in the cosmetics industry for over 25 years: first at Shiseido, then at Estée Lauder, La Mer, Bobbi Brown and Jo Malone. I then moved into the professional world to brands like Maria Galland, Babor and now QMS.
How was the QMS Medicosmetics brand established?
In the 1980s, QMS founder and surgeon Erich Schulte, MD, sought a way to prepare the skin of burn and accident victims to heal well before surgery. He found that introducing skin-identical collagen and hyaluronic acid accelerated skin regeneration in a spectacular way, significantly improving its elasticity and appearance in record time. For years he studied collagen research and in 1994 he finally developed the QMS skin care system from his research results. This is also our USP: a German Doctor brand specialized in collagen products, distributed exclusively and selectively. QMS has become a major international player, excelling in individualized and personalized products. Our Role Models are, for example, our management team, who share their love for the products, treatments and routines. As a brand, we continue to focus on professional treatments and work on the cause of skin problems, not on the symptoms. We also focus on effective products - so it's all about quality, not quantity.
The products are now very popular internationally. How do you explain this success?
QMS has a great focus on collagen. If you look around the cosmetics market, you will mainly find active ingredients that stimulate the skin's collagen production or marine collagen, which is 77% similar to human DNA. We use bovine collagen in our products, which is 97% skin identical to human collagen. With a focused product line supported by highly effective professional treatments, you see immediate results. Even if you use our Intravital (collagen nutritional supplement), you will notice a difference after about 3 days. Every skin has different needs. With our personalized products, we can make a difference quickly.
Which QMS products are your absolute must-haves?
The core of QMS consists of a peeling (7% or 11%) and a day and a night collagen serum. These are our Heroes and the basis for every QMS routine. My absolute highlight: the Collagen Recovery Day & Night Cream. I really can't live without this product. The restorative power of this cream is unique.
What does your daily skin care routine look like? Do you have any tips for us?
My personal collagen routine consists of 8-9 steps every morning and evening:
Step 1: Cleaning
Step 2: Exfoliant (1x daily)
Step 3: Tonic
Step 4: Collagen for day and night
Step 5: Eye Care
Step 6: Serum for special purposes
Step 7: Cream
Step 8: SPF (only in the morning)
Step 9: Collagen nourishing supplement
Especially in the evening I like to use an additional serum or mask to regenerate the skin for the night. I learned this in Asia, where the skin and its care is really a cult, while in our country it is much more about multifunctional products (one product must be able to do everything). For example, if you have a pigment spot, you can apply the appropriate serum selectively instead of on the whole face.
What do you think are the go's and no go's in skin care?
I always ask: What do you present yourself with in your life? Besides personality, it's appearance, your face, and of course your expression (eyes and mouth). So what do we need to invest in the most? In our skin care! Injections and fillers in themselves are not a problem, but they do not change the skin condition. The moment you start a thorough skin care routine, you need to invest less in Botox or fillers. I'm also a big advocate of a single brand and not using products from different brands together. Your skin often has to adapt to temperature, humidity, UV rays or pollution, so you need special care for that as well. And in addition it´s very good to regularly visit a professional beautician to help the skin mechanism and improve your skin every few weeks.
If a new customer wants to discover the brand QMS, which products should he or she start with?
All new clients start with a personal consultation, during which the skin is examined and the client's wishes and care goals are addressed. In principle, we always start with a 7% peeling and the day and night collagen serum. However, in case of problem skin, the peeling can be even milder. Every person, every skin is individual and has a different focus. Therefore, it is very difficult to give a universal advice. This is the strength of QMS: individualization and personalization.
What else can we additionally do against skin aging?
Daily protection from UV radiation and pollution is an absolute must nowadays. Pollution is visible everywhere nowadays, it crosses borders and affects everyone. Protection from radiation and blue light must also be considered. Nobody lives an ideal life. That is, we all sometimes do not get enough sleep. We all have a sip of wine or beer and not enough water. We all enjoy the glorious sun on the patio from time to time. We all work too much and spend too much time behind the laptop or on the phone. After all, we want to enjoy life. And we create effective products and effective treatments to help us do that!
What QMS innovations can we look forward to? What is planned?
We have planned our Green Agenda with sustainability goals until the end of 2023. This means that we produce in a CO2-neutral way, label paper and cardboard with the FSC seal, replace package inserts with QR codes, use recycled or recyclable plastic, package our serums and creams in glass, and try to avoid blacklisted ingredients as much as possible. For a relatively small brand like QMS, that's a big task, but one we don't shy away from.
What are your brand goals in the next 10 years?
Currently, QMS is growing primarily on an international level. Our global presence is expanding significantly. More and more 5-star-plus hotels and spas are adopting our great brand. We are receiving more and more awards for the unique products, exceptional spas and treatments, and for our brand, which really stands out in the world. After all, we don't want to copy anything, but remain unique and offer a distinctive character.
And finally, we'd love to know what your beauty philosophy is?
Many things are interchangeable. Clothes last a season, accessories are subject to fashion trends, a car has a certain lifespan, a trip is an experience. But our skin is unique and we have it for our whole life. Therefore, we should take care of it to keep the perfect skin condition as long as possible. We cannot replace our skin, we can only value it.
Mr. Stanlein, thank you very much for the interview and your time. We wish you all the best and continued success!
