Interview with beauty talent and young entrepreneur EDWARD BESS
After his theater studies in New York and a career as a model, Edward Bess devoted himself to his absolute passion: beauty. With the age of 20 he launched his first beauty collection "Lip Wardorbe" in 2006 - a box of ten lipstick colours. The collection was offered at the famous Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York and sold out immediately. Inspired by the incredible success, he developed his first make-up collection. The result is a high-quality product range that ranges from foundation and lipstick to eyeliner and his signature Bess-Lash-Mascara, all true to his motto "Less is more". The charming young entrepreneur from New York answered a few questions about his products and gave us an insight into his exciting life.
What is the idea behind the brand Edward Bess?
My lifelong passion for beauty inspired me to share my perspective on why less is more. I grew up telling my three sisters and mom how to do their makeup and giving advice to those around me so I figured I should go on and give the same beauty advice to others looking to enhance their natural beauty. It all began with my first collection of edited lip colors. I continued to share my philosophy by introducing products that are not based on trend or season so you always look like the best version of yourself.
Aside from the brand - Who is Edward Bess?
We’re one and the same! My products are deeply personal, so they definitely take inspiration from my life and travels. I grew up in South Carolina in the United States and moved to NYC when I was 15 to study theater. NYC is still my home base and provides endless amounts of inspiration for my creations. I love seeing theater, ballet and museums so you can imagine the thrill of living in this always exciting city. I also love seeing the world so when I am not in NYC you’ll find me on a plane hopefully en route to somewhere I’ve never been before.
How do you explain the international success of your beauty products?
It’s a joy to see my products being loved. I have always tried to keep things simple and steer clear of trends. It’s fun to try something new but ultimately my goal has always been to create beauty that stands the test of time. I would never want to be the reason you look back at on old photo of yourself and wonder why you tried a trend that didn’t suit your look – just be yourself.
What are your absolute top 3 products?
It's really hard, but I'm sure everyone has to experience the Ultra Slick Lipstick, the Ultra Dewy Complexion Perfector and the Marbleized Rose Gold Powder Highlighter. With these three essential elements, anyone can create a final look and be ready to face the world in a hurry. Each of these beauties is designed to give a professional look, even when applied to the back of a taxi.
Your career in the cosmetics industry started with the creation of a lipstick collection. How did you know how to do that?
I have always been surrounded by women and quickly learned the difference having on the right lipstick could make. Even today I feel this is the fasted way to enhance one’s beauty in a flash. I trusted my instinct and made it my mission to make sure no one left the house without putting on lipstick – MY lipstick of course!
Which new products can we look forward to?
The lips have my heart so stay tuned for some upcoming lip formulas that will have you blowing kisses in grand style.
Where do you get your inspiration for new products from?
I turn to the endless source of endless inspiration provided by Mother Nature and simply try to mimic the effects of natural beauty when I set out to create new products. I’ll use any excuse to take a vacation somewhere colorful and inspiring. The hard part is keeping it simple, so I always keep in mind how important it is that my products enhance without overwhelming.
Do you have a beauty icon?
My mother, of course! I owe her for inspiring my original love for beauty and always encouraging me to follow my passion. She’s a beauty inside and out, and that’s something that can’t be bottled.
What was the best moment of your career?
There have been many highlights since embarking on my journey in beauty and certainly some stand out. Selling out on my first day launching at Bergdorf Goodman in NYC. A note from Catherine Deneuve with a kiss mark wearing my Nude Lotus lipstick comes to mind. Debuting my perfume collection, especially my last creation Last Night created with master perfumer Carlos Benaim. And launching in Germany for the first time – I can’t wait to see what the future holds!
What does beauty mean to you?
Beauty is elusive but the thrill certainly makes the chase all worth it. It comes in the form of a lipstick you spent your whole life waiting to find, the moment of a sunset somewhere you dreamed of going, and even by finding a taxi in the rain. Beauty is all around us in many forms – we just have to remember to look for it.
