Do you suffer from mascne? Then we have the right care and some tips for you, so that your skin under the mask remains beautifully radiant and pure.
Some people find them annoying, others combine them as a stylish fashion accessory and they are our constant companions during the pandemic period: masks or "mouth and nose protection" as they are called in the trade jargon. The containment of Covid-19 is clearly in the foreground. But even if the breathing masks ensure our safety and that of our fellow men, they also have a negative side effect: Maskne! You are probably wondering what is meant by the term "mask"? In itself it is quite simply explained: it is about acne-like skin symptoms and skin problems that arise from wearing the mask. These include above all pimples and blackheads, impure skin, redness but also itching.
How do pimples and blackheads appear under the mask?
The long wearing of masks can cause acne, rashes, redness and also dermatitis. Existing skin problems can even get worse. The skin does not get air under the mask, our breathing creates a so-called "moisture chamber" and the skin sweats. Friction and pressure are other factors that cause small micro injuries. These early then by germs to infections and the humid climate under the mask promotes their growth.
How can we prevent "Maskne"?
With the right facial cleansing, skin care and the right tips, you can easily prevent the typical mask symptoms such as pimples, rashes and redness:
Because of the respiratory protection we put on daily and the resulting skin problems like pimples under the mask, a thorough cleansing of the skin in the morning and evening is even more important. Therefore, always choose a cleanser that is tailored to your skin type and that thoroughly removes residues of make-up, dead skin flakes, sebum and bacteria. Micellar cleansing products such as Comfort Zone's Essential Micellar Water are ideal for use with masks, as they act like a magnet that absorbs and removes dirt and germs. Guinot's Mousse Nettoyante Microbiotic thoroughly cleanse the skin without removing moisture. The ultra-mild cleansing gel Epigen Pollution Detox Cleansing Gel from QMS Medicosmetics effectively removes residues of external pollutants and cleanses deep into the pores.
2. Light textures against pimples and impurities
Impure, oily skin naturally needs different care than dry skin. These skin types do not change even when wearing respiratory masks. If you have pimples under the mask, we recommend using light textures that effectively fight impurities. The Re-charge PH from bdr is a hyaluronic serum gel for a clear and pure skin appearance. But also the light Skin Regimen 1.0 Tea Tree Booster with tea tree oil concentrate fights impurities and reduces dilated pores. As additional care you can use the Active Pureness Mask from Comfort Zone. The matting mask with clay refines the skin's appearance and removes excess sebum.
If you have very dry skin, daily skin care with the appropriate facial products can protect against additional friction caused by the mask. Make sure that you apply the product about half an hour to an hour before putting on the mask, so that the care can be properly absorbed. Here we recommend the light Hyaluron Premium Gel by Cosmaderm or the Intensive Moisturizing Serum Re-charge N by bdr. Rich skin care products with a longer application time should always be used in the evening.
You wear make-up every day? While wearing a mask, we recommend that you avoid heavy make-up, as this additionally clogs the pores and leads to mascara. But if you don't want to do without it completely and simply feel more comfortable with make-up, you can use a lightly tinted day cream such as Active Glow SPF15 from QMS Medicosmetics or Le Privilège Base Traitante skin care from Rivoli.
Unlike the skin, our lips quickly become dry, chapped and chapped when wearing the mask. In addition, the bacteria and germs can often cause herpes or inflammation. Therefore, pay sufficient attention to the mouth area when cleaning your face and then use a rich lip care product such as Lip Balm from Stageline or Renewal Lip Complex from Dermalogica.
3. wearing time and comfort
If possible, you should not wear the mask for more than 1 to 1.5 hours. Remove the mask from time to time to allow your skin to breathe. The material is also crucial for skin compatibility. Synthetic materials quickly accumulate moisture, whereas cotton is more comfortable for our skin and does not cause additional irritation.
4. wash regularly
To ensure that fabric masks protect properly, they must be washed regularly. Washing by hand is gentler on the material and boiling the mask kills germs. If you wash the mask in the washing machine, avoid the spin cycle, as this roughens the material and is quite unpleasant on the skin. If you use fabric masks, it is better to put on two or three masks at once and change them regularly.
